Well known people associated with the park

Thomas Mawson & Sons Ltd

Thomas Mawson (1861-1933)

The park was built in 1921 by the company Thomas Mawson and Sons. Much of the work on Stanley Park was undertaken by Edward Prentice Mawson, the son of Thomas. In the mid-20's Edward began to take over the business as Thomas was suffering increasing poor health.

Thomas Mawson was born not too far away in Scorton and started in the building trade in Lancaster. He then moved to London and on to Windermere where he opened a nursery.

He designed many gardens and their features in Cumbria at well known houses such as Holker Hall, Levens Hall, Rydal Hall and expanded his activities all over Britain. Of note are his designs for Lord Leverhulme: at his Cheshire house, Thornton Lodge, a 400 acre park near Bolton and his London home of 'The Hill' in Hampstead.

He was also the President of the Town Planning Institute, the first president of the Institute of Landscape Architects and wrote a book called the Art and Craft of Garden Making being the first book to link the Art and Craft Movement with garden design and is regarded as the foundation of modern landscape architecture.

Thomas Mawson is also associated with work in Canada and the USA. Two of his gardens were recently renovated on the Channel 4 programme, Lost Gardens.
