It is easy to obtain a Facebook account by registering on their website. Note that it is not necessary for you to enter much information about yourself. You can also use a 'nom de plume' although it's against Facebook rules.
The privacy settings are fairly complex so until you understand how to use the site we'd recommend that you keep information to a minimum.
There are a lot of informative topics on Facebook covering politics, tv shows, hobbies, personalities as well as some that some FoSP members might find offensive. Most pages have open access so it is possible to find comments on any page you'd prefer not to read. Most pages have moderators or can exclude access but it's not perfect.
Once you get an account you can click on the 'Like it' button to appear on the list of 'likers' of the page.
